Hermes is the narrator, guide, and emotional anchor of the musical. Based on the Greek messenger of god, he is a storyteller, a mentor, a bandleader/emcee and a witness to repeating tragedy

They open and close the show, inviting the audience into the story. Hermes is often portrayed as: charismatic, playful, wise, compassionate but weary underneath the humour. Balancing warmth with melancholy, with jokes, dances, and keeps the energy moving, but there's usually an undercurrent that they have seen this tragedy happen before. That mix of joy and sorrow makes them one of the emotional centres of the show.

Hermes has a jazz- and blues-influenced performance style and leads several important songs. The role is often performed with a lot of improvisational personality, making each actor's Hermes feel distinct while still carrying the same emotional weight.
