Overview of Role/Notes

Playing a large role in the production the company are observers, commentators and participators. They spend a lot of time on stage watching and supporting the storytelling, through vocals and defining the space and energy. This is not a traditional musical for the company, there are no big company 'dance' numbers. The company will be required to act through song and undertake movement. It is important auditionees understand the piece before committing to the workshop to ensure they wish to be part of the project.

In the second half of the production the company form the workers of Hadestown moving almost mechanically as an ensemble. Their work is repetitive and exhausting, reflecting the industrial, factory-like world Hades has created. Almost machine like the workers will undertake synchronized movement, lowered heads, identical costumes,
and rhythmic marching choreography.

The company typically sing layered ensemble harmonies and when workers rhythmic chants with call-and-response sections. Their singing often sounds unified rather than individual, reinforcing the loss of personal identity inside Hadestown.

Periods of concentration and stillness will need to be held on stage, and there will be a signifcant amount of singing time in the rehearsal period. The company are important storytellers, the role relies heavily on facial expression and ensemble acting.

Looking for: Hard working team players, who can provide physical storytelling and are strong harmony singers.
